Stay at the Sleep Inn in Tinley Park, a short drive from Mokena. Located just off Interstate 80, the hotel is connected to the Tinly Park Convention Center. The museum offers a tour train operated by the Tourist Train on a former railroad line that belongs to the Illinois Terminal, Illinois Central and Gulf. In 1987, the museum acquired the former Chicago and Illinois Pacific Railroad tracks parallel to the Park and Ride tracks in Makena, Michigan.
The purchase by the Central Division enabled the museum to move from the historic depot of the Wabash Railroad to downtown Monticello, where it would become a museum of the historic railroad. The depot was moved to the museum in the 1980s and is the cash desk and gift shop for the museums. A new steel bridge was built over the former Chicago and Illinois Pacific Railroad tracks in Makena, Michigan, and the line has since been straightened and moved west to fill it.
No. 1 was purchased in 1966 and was the museum's first instrument, and it was used to transport marine samples until 1972 by the John G. Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The Nautilus II aquarium wagon has been rebuilt and the Wabash F7A railway is leading the museum's tourist trains. The Illinois Central 7 was built in 1917 by the Pullman Company as a viewing car for the Illinois Central Railroad office and viewing cars. No. 1189 rests in front of the Nelson Crossing Depot, one of only two of its kind in the United States.
The Rock Island 2541 was built in 1917 by the Pullman Company as a viewing car for the Illinois Central Railroad office and as a viewing car.
